to release Bhutanese political<br>\nprisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Excellency,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My name is Mr. Ram Bahadur Karki, a Human Rights Activist and at<br>\npresent the coordinator of Global Campaign for the Release of Political<br>\nPrisoners in Bhutan based in The Hague, The Netherlands.<br>\nWe have earlier raised this issue with your good office seeking support and<br>\nsolidarity in releasing these prisoners. We would like to resend the request<br>\nand seek your attention again on the issue.<br>\nWe would like to seek your support and solidarity for the safe release of<br>\npolitical prisoners in Bhutan. Your Excellency might be well informed<br>\nabout the human rights and democratic movement that took place during<br>\nearly 1990s in Bhutan which resulted in eviction of more than one-sixth of<br>\nthe country\u2019s population. Hundreds of human rights activists were arrested<br>\nduring the course of many years, aftermath the peaceful demonstrations of<br>\n1990s.<br>\nBhutanese Refugee camps were established in early 1991 in eastern Nepal<br>\nwhere till 2008 more than hundred and twenty thousands Bhutanese<br>\nrefugees were taking shelters under the care of UNHCR. When the 15<br>\nrounds of Nepal-Bhutan bilateral talks to resolve the Bhutanese refugee<br>\ncrisis failed, 8 core group countries resettled more than 110,000 of them<br>\nAround 8,000 of them are still living in refugee camps in eastern Nepal<br>\nhoping to return one day back to their own country with honour and<br>\ndignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Excellency, despite Bhutan declaring itself as a democracy in 2007<br>\nand holding three general elections since then, it has failed to release those<br>\npolitical prisoners whom they have arrested for their involvement in the<br>\npeaceful struggle for human rights and justice in the country. Most of<br>\npolitical prisoners in Bhutan were sentenced to life for going against the<br>\ncountry\u2019s pre democratic system and now the democracy has prevailed in<br>\nthe country, and we feel that there is no reason why they should continue<br>\nsuffering their lives in the prisons.<br>\nFamilies of those political prisoners who were living in the refugee camps<br>\nare now mostly resettled in various parts of the world and ICRC stopped<br>\nthe family visit programme for them. The wishes of elderly parents to at<br>\nleast see the faces of their imprisoned sons before their death is vanishing<br>\nday by day. Likewise, the children of those prisoners born before their<br>\nfather was arrested, are longing to seen the real face of their father. Their<br>\nwives\u2019 hope of getting opportunity to live with their husbands has been<br>\ngetting thinner and thinner day by day.<br>\nThus, taking this auspicious occasion we again appeal your high office to<br>\nkindly persuade the king of Bhutan to kindly grant clemency to all the<br>\npolitical prisoners and let them live rest of their precious lives with their<br>\nfamilies in peace.<br>\nOnce again, we request your high office to kindly take up this matter as<br>\nserious and do everything possible to resolve this grave humanitarian<br>\nissue.
